Alleged Sydney cocaine cabbie denied bail

A Sydney taxi driver accused of delivering cocaine across the city has been refused bail.

Ihsan Salma, 35, was allegedly caught with $350,000 in cash and hundreds of grams of drugs after police busted a pizza-delivery style drug syndicate late last year.

Magistrate Les Mabbutt said Salma faced extremely serious charges and the case against him was strong, saying he could not form the view the accused's detention was unjustified.

Defence lawyer Malcolm Ramage, QC, told Central Local Court his client was the primary carer for a wife suffering chronic and debilitating migraines.

Mr Ramage said Salma had significant ties to the community and argued it could be years before he finally faced trial.

"Delay is a significant matter in these cases," Mr Ramage said on Friday.

"It is a matter of real concern that she (Salma's wife) would be assisted looking after the children."

Mr Ramage said his client would surrender his passport and agree to any court-imposed bail conditions, while his family's $1.3 million home would be offered as surety.

The prosecution opposed bail, arguing the accused was a key part of a "highly sophisticated" syndicate.

The court heard Salma allegedly twice supplied drugs to undercover officers and was accused of supplying drugs to others more than 60 times over several months.

Mr Mabbutt said the cash and drugs allegedly discovered in a raid of Salma's house and large volume of alleged phone intercepts amounted to a strong prosecution case.

The allegations levelled against Salma were extremely serious.

"I cannot come to the view that detention is not justified, and bail is refused," Mr Mabbutt said.

Three other men were charged over their alleged roles in the scheme and remain before the courts.
