A record 62 litres of the drug used to manufacture "liquid ecstasy" has been seized from a man who allegedly tried to import the drugs into Australia.

Several bottles of the drug gammabutyrolactone (GBL) were found in the 37-year-old man's bag after he got off a flight from Thailand on Thursday, the Australian Federal Police say.

He was charged with importing a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug and refused bail when he faced court on Friday.

The Australian Border Force said the detection was an important one for the community.

"This is a dangerous substance, capable of ruining many lives in a single incident," BF Regional Commander NSW, Tim Fitzgerald said.

GBL, also known as coma in a bottle, can cause abrupt loss of consciousness, memory loss, respiratory difficulties, coma and death.
