Man fights for life after being dragged along train platform

A man is fighting for life after he was dragged along the platform of a Melbourne train station.

John Roberts, 57, is thought to have been running for a train at Heatherdale Station in Melbourne’s east on Saturday around 4.10pm when the doors shut.

The father from Lilydale then became caught in the gap between the carriage and the platform and was dragged a number of metres.

He sustained life-threatening injuries including broken bones and facial fractures and remains at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in an induced coma.

John’s brother Paul told 9News that the family is “all pretty broken up”.

“He’s going to be a cripple and out of action for the rest of his life,” he said.

Paul said a representative from Metro Trains had called him providing an empathetic ear, telling the shocked brother to call back anytime.

“I try not to cry because someone has to be strong,” Paul said.

“I’ll have a drink and then I’ll have a cry.”

In a statement to 9News a Metro spokesperson said: "Metro’s highest priority is the safety of its passengers and staff.

"Our thoughts are with the passenger who was involved in Saturday’s incident at Heatherdale Station.

"Metro’s investigation into the incident is ongoing."
