Electronic music festival Hypersonic has been cancelled weeks before it was scheduled to go ahead.

Organisers confirmed that Hypersonic Sydney and Melbourne will not take place in 2026, claiming that scheduling issues caused a raft of “flow-on” problems for the event.

The festival was slated to take place at Melbourne Showground on November 20 and Sydney’s Royal Randwick Racecourse on November 21.

“We are devastated to confirm that hypersonic Sydney and Melbourne will not be going ahead in 2026,” Hypersonic’s organisers said in a statement on its website.

“Due to scheduling conflicts, Melbourne was moved to a Friday this year. Unfortunately, this change hasn’t worked out as hoped for an all-day festival.

“The flow-on impact has meant we can no longer deliver the festivals to the standard our artists and audience deserve.”

The line-up included Australian musician Timmy Trumpet, fellow Australian DJ Cyrl, Dutch DJ Armin van Buuren and electronic duo Bassjackers.

Ticket holders have been told to request a refund or to transfer their tickets to Dreamstate 2027, another festival being held in Sydney and Melbourne in February next year.

Both festivals are produced by Australian electronic and trance music event company Symbiotic.

Hypersonic held its inaugural events at Sydney Showground and Melbourne Showground in November last year.

An estimated 30,000 people attended the first festival in Sydney.

Australia’s troubled music festival scene has seen the likes of legacy events Bluesfest, Groovin’ The Moo and Splendour in the Grass cancelled.

Despite the tough climate, electronic music events and dance festivals have been traditionally well-attended.

Hypersonic organisers did not confirm if the festival will return in 2027.
