Melbourne traffic has been brought to a standstill during this morning’s peak after a multi-vehicle accident on the Eastern Freeway.

Just after 8am, a truck and three cars collided near Middleborough Road, Box Hill North.

The truck, which was fully laden with sand, rolled over, spilling its load across all city-bound lanes.

The truck driver suffered a broken leg and back injury and has been taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.

Two women from one car and a man from another are being treated at Box Hill Hospital for minor injuries.

The Eastern Freeway remains closed between Springvale Road in Nunawading and Elgar Road in Doncaster.

It’s not expected to reopen until this afternoon, which is likely to affect commuters during this evening’s peak.
