Disqualified hit-and-run driver pleads guilty, asks judge for leniency

A 25-year-old South Australian woman has pleaded guilty in court to charges related to a hit and run last month.

Danielle Lewis T-boned a car containing two people at a main intersection near Morphett Vale on May 11 before running from the scene.

Trapped inside the wreckage she left behind critically injured 51-year-old Rena Yaeger (who at the time of the crash was aged 50) and her passenger.

Lewis's licence was disqualified at the time of the crash.

But despite today admitting to causing the crash and leaving Yeager for dead, Lewis told the court she will be appealing for a lighter sentence.

Lewis's lawyer told the court her decision to plead guilty to two aggravated counts of causing harm by dangerous driving and one of failing to stop and render assistance was made as early as possible.

Her lawyer asked the court to make a note of that on the woman's official record.

Lewis could be entitled to a discount as high as 25 per cent.

She will remain in custody until she learns if her legal tactic has been successful.

For Yeager, however, the fallout from the crash is far from over.

After being rushed to Flinders Medical Centre ICU where she was intubated and put on a ventilator, she was found to have bleeding and swelling to her brain, a collapsed lung, lacerations of her spleen and liver, and multiple fractures including sternum, pelvis, and ribs.

Her passenger sustained multiple injuries and also spent time recovering in hospital.
