A man who allegedly doused himself in petrol near the Australian War Memorial in Canberra has surrendered to police, ending a tense, two-hour standoff.

Specialist Response Group officers swarmed on the man who had several cans of fuel beside him on Anzac Parade earlier this afternoon.

The main thoroughfare was cordoned off as negotiators in bullet proof vests attempted to negotiate with the man.

Officers later moved in and have taken him into custody.
