Driver chased down after pedestrian left with life-threatening injuries

An 81-year-old driver was chased down by a witness after a collision that left a man hospitalised in Melbourne's east last night.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Whitehorse Road and Station Street in Mitcham, just before 10pm.

Police were told a man was trying to cross the road when he was struck by a car.

A 65-year-old man was taken to hospital with suspected life-threatening injuries.

The 81-year-old driver of the car allegedly initially left the scene but returned after a witness followed him from the scene.

The man is currently assisting police with their enquiries.

The area has been cordoned off as detectives investigate.
