Man charged with murder of pregnant woman and partner in Melbourne home

Police have charged a man with murder after two bodies were found at a unit covered in graffiti in Melbourne's east on Monday night.

Detectives arrived at the Adrienne Crescent home in Mount Waverley just before 10pm on Monday after screams were heard coming from the property.

It's understood several concerned calls were made to triple zero, including one from an associate of the accused living in NSW.

Officers found the bodies of a woman and a man inside the house.

Nine newspapers have identified the victims as Mount Waverley residents 39-year-old Athena Georgopoulos, who was five months pregnant, and her 50-year-old partner Andrew Gunn.

Relatives of Georgopoulos have said that she was so happy to have fallen pregnant because she didn't believe that she was able to do so.

It's understood he was found decapitated.

After making the grisly discovery, police, including the canine squad, launched a large manhunt in the surrounding streets.

Officers arrested a 34-year-old man of no fixed address about 1.40am yesterday at Westall Station, where he was found walking with two German shepherds.

Video footage captured him being taken into a divvy van in cuffs with a bloody shirt.

Detectives were questioning him last night before announcing he'd been charged about 10.30pm.

Earlier yesterday, Detective Inspector Dean Thomas said the man arrived at the home before the start of a dispute, which allegedly resulted in the two deaths.

"The message here is that it appears to be a targeted attack. Our suspect is known to the address," Thomas alleged.

"We are not looking for anybody else. It appears to be isolated."

9News understands the accused had been to the home several times in the past but was not related to the victims.

Exactly how they knew each other will form part of the police investigation, along with whether the motive behind the attack was the result of a drug debt.

Various words and phrases have been spray-painted on the house where the victims were found, including "karma has no menu" and "enough is enough".

Images captured by the 9News helicopter show several exterior walls covered in graffiti.

"Homicide Squad detectives will work to determine if the graffiti is relevant to the murder investigation," police told 9News.
