A seven-year-old boy has been attacked by a dog in Perth.

The dog, described as a bull mastiff, attacked Carter Bungard at Charlottes Vineyard Oval in Ellenbrook at 6.30pm on Tuesday. The dog was on a leash at the time.

Bungard, who'd been playing rugby with his father, suffered injuries to his forehead and chest, as well as a fractured nose. He was taken to hospital where he underwent cosmetic surgery on his face.

"It looked like a murder scene as such, we got to the hospital and it was just everywhere, undescribable, every parent's worst nightmare," Mother Pryncess Adamson said.

"We're not talking just your normal puncture, there [are] scratches all the way through his whole face."

His parents said the sand-coloured mastiff lunged at Bungard after its owners asked if the child wanted to pet the dog.

They said the owner left after the attack.

Adamson is urging the owners to come forward and wants to warn others in the area.

"I've taught my kids to always ask before you pat and they just love animals, now he's said to me a couple of times, 'I don't want to go near dogs again, I don't like dogs anymore'," she said.

"I just think you can never be too careful."
