Woolworths unveils new security measures to deter shoplifting
New sensor technology is being rolled out at select Woolworths stores across the country in a bid to reduce shoplifting.
A Woolworths spokesperson said the trial would include six stores in Victoria and New South Wales, with the first being Fairfield.
The spokesperson said the technology would act as a deterrent to would-be shopping lifters, along with keeping staff and customers safe.

Customers will notice the overhead sensors when they walk into the self-serve checkout area.
The sensors will identify when someone enters the area and assigns them with a digital ID.
Alongside the digital ID, there will be a red marker until the customer has paid at one of the checkouts, at which point it will turn green.
Once green, the gate will automatically open when the customer has walked up to it.
The spokesperson said customers would remain unidentifiable throughout the whole process and each digital ID would be deleted as soon as the respective customer exits the store.

"We've recently begun a trial of new sensor technology to help reduce stock loss and to keep our customers and team safe," the spokesperson said.
"This is one of a number of initiatives, both covert and overt, to minimise instances of retail crime in store networks across the Group."
The first store trialling the technology is Fairfield with the following stores to follow; Moorabbin, Millers Junction, Woodgrove, Wentworthville, and Randwick Metro.
