Adelaide homeless shelter concerning locals

An Adelaide family has been left traumatised after they caught two intruders, believed to be from a nearby homeless shelter, rummaging through their lounge room.

Wayne Copley was with his family this morning when he was confronted by a man and woman in his home on Hutt Street, in Adelaide’s southeast.

“We were shocked. We just took action to get them out,” Mr Copley told 9News.

“There was a lot of shouting. I feel shaken.”

The Copleys' home is just metres away from the controversial Hutt Street Centre, a homeless shelter the two intruders were seen returning to shortly before they were arrested by police.

Mr Copley is a member of the Hutt Street Resident’s Association, a group actively campaigning for action to be taken on the continuing crime around the homeless shelter.

“How can we stop this constant traversing of people throughout the suburb just wreaking havoc?” Mr Copley said.

Local trader Colette Slight says she is also frustrated.

“I just can’t imagine how he (Mr Copley) feels, it’s one event after the other if you are living on those tracks to the Hutt Street Centre,” she told 9News.

A meeting between the residents' group and centre management is scheduled to take place next week to address the issue of ongoing crime and locals' fears.

The centre released a statement saying it takes the crime in the area seriously and they are in regular contact with police.

The man and woman involved in the break-and-enter have been charged with serious criminal trespass.
