Hundreds of thousands of people have packed the streets of Adelaide in perfect weather for the anticipated Christmas Parade.

A record 315,000 people filled the city's streets for the biggest parade since 2019.

A line of festive floats and performers put on a spectacular show for the young and young at heart.

More than 2500 performers, 18 bands, three choirs, 20 dance groups and 300 clowns and elves contributed to the magic.

Front row seats were hotly contested with many people camping out for hours.

"We got here at 11pm last night," one woman told 9News.

This year's pageant featured more than 170 moving theatrical sets, including six new floats such as the Christmas limousine.

However, the main attraction for many people was a special appearance by Santa Claus himself.

"It's so good to be back here in Adelaide," he told the crowd.

"Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas!"

Pageant director Brian Gilbertson said the festive spirit well and truly filled the city.

"We did share a lot of joy today and that was the theme, the joy of Christmas and you all did it so thank you," Gilbertson said.
