Body found on roadside at Homebush in Sydney's west

Police have confirmed that a body found wrapped in material on the side of a road in western Sydney overnight is that of a male.

An investigation has been launched after a truck driver found the body just off Homebush Bay Drive at Sydney Olympic Park at 10.30pm last night when his vehicle broke down.

Authorities said the driver was setting up witches' hats behind his broken-down truck when he came across the body in a roadside water culvert.

Local police, forensics services and officers from the homicide squad were called immediately to the scene and the body was taken to Glebe City morgue.

The unidentified man was sent to the morgue the same way it was found, with officers reluctant to unwrap the body for fear of contaminating any potential evidence.

It was raining heavily when the man's body was found. Investigators hope the autopsy being conducted today will help give a clue as to how he died.

"It is a male, but there is no further identifying features, documentation or other objects that may indicate the name of this person," detective inspector Paul Arnold said.

"I would strongly be encouraging any person who has a loved on who has not arrived home, or perhaps stayed out longer than they're due or has not been seen for some time, and has concerns to contact police and make a missing persons report."

Police today set up a crime scene around where the body was found, which is about 200 metres north of the Australia Avenue exit ramp, and conducted a line search of the area.

"From my understanding, he was underneath some sort of material, so I don't know what clothing he was either wearing or not wearing," Det Insp Arnold said.

"Hopefully tomorrow we will have some further information that may give us a time frame (of the man's death).

"We may then be seeking some information from the public in terms of dashcam or other footage that may assist in our enquiries."

The dumping ground backs on to Bicentennial Park and is near children's playgrounds and cafes.

Police have approached business owners in the vicinity of the crime scene to assist with any CCTV footage they may have.

Theodore Drivas told 9NEWS the area had "nothing but good vibes".

"We have a lot of regulars, lots of families who come to the playgrounds within the Olympic Park," he said.

"It's very much a shock to us, what's happened today."

Officers scoured the scene this morning for any clues as to how the body was found dumped on the roadside.

Authorities have not confirmed whether the person was male or female, but the grim discovery is being treated as suspicious.

It comes just a week after another disturbing find in Sydney, when the body of Shane Snellman was found in a home in Sydney's lower north shore last Tuesday.

Snellman's mummified remains had been inside the home at Greenwich for a decade, with his family informed of his death earlier this week.
