Sean Thompson

Experience

Sean has been a journalist and editor for more than 15 years working across print, digital and television newsrooms.

After a year in automotive journalism, Sean’s career really kicked off in 2012 when he began working as a reporter and later an editor at News Corp. He worked for several local newspapers across Sydney, finishing his time with the company as editor of Southern Courier. This is where his love for local communities grew, by telling stories about everyday Australians to recognise their achievements and champion their causes.

During that time at News Corp he also worked with the digital team at The Daily Telegraph.

Sean’s career at Nine began in 2017 as morning editor of 9news.com.au, breaking stories from Australia and around the world in step with TV newsrooms across the country.

Sean then joined the broadcast team full-time as a senior producer. He spent almost four years working across every news show and bulletin including Today Show, afternoon news and 6pm covering major international events and state and federal elections.

Sean then moved to the company’s publishing division as a desk editor at The Australian Financial Review. At the country’s most prestigious national newspaper, Sean worked on the digital and print editions to enhance coverage in both mediums.

In 2023 Sean rejoined Nine’s digital publishing arm to helm the nine.com.au homepage, where he also takes charge of meeting the network’s commercial and partner targets.

Education

Sean holds a Bachelor of Communication and Media Studies, Majoring in Journalism, University of Wollongong (2008-2010).
