Government welfare crackdown nets $1.4 billion
A Turnbull government crackdown on welfare fraud has netted $1.4 billion since last year’s election.
From July 2016 to the end of last year, the Department of Human Services (DHS) probed 1400 cases of welfare fraud.

Prosecutors pursued 956 cases, with a man who stole the identity of dead children is among those who made false claims, according to News Corp.
Another case reportedly resulted in the offender being sentenced to three years’ jail after using an alias to claim $160,000 in disability pensions.
The DHS uses data-matching technology which can pinpoint discrepancies in payments.
The system, introduced in mid-2016, has increased the amount of yearly welfare checks by 500,000, ABC News reports.
