George Harrison's tree destroyed by beetles

In a remarkable twist of irony, a tree planted in memory of George Harrison has been killed by beetles.

The pine was planted in Los Angeles in 2004 in memory of the late Beatles guitarist, but an insect infestation from bark beetles brought about the tree's demise.

Another tree will be planted in the musician's honour, local councilman Tom LaBonge told the Los Angeles Times.

In addition to being one of the world's most influential guitarists and songwriters, George Harrison was also an avid gardener.

Long overshadowed by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, Harrison spent much of his early solo career expressing his frustration of his time with the Fab Four.

But well-known for his sense of humour, Harrison would probably be amused by the irony of a tree planted in his honour being destroyed by beetles.
