False Botox vials found, prompting urgent health warnings

Multiple vials of fake botox have been stopped at the border, prompting warnings against buying injectables from overseas.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration said the boxes of the apparent Botox appeared to be genuine, branded Botox products manufactured by the legitimate brand Allergan, a company run by AbbVie.

While the boxes appeared to be genuine, there were inconsistencies identified on the packaging, including typographic errors, incorrect spacing, bolding and spelling mistakes.

The TGA also confirmed with AbbVie that the batch numbers on the boxes - C7211C4 and HA 33946 - were not real batches.

The batches were ordered from an overseas supplier, not from an Australian Pharmacy

These injectables can pose a serious health risk and should not be used, the TGA said.

Anyone who may have Botox products with the above serial numbers should take them to their local pharmacy for safe disposal.

If anyone has concerns that they have been injected with a false Botox product, they should see a healthcare professional.

Consumers have been reminded that Botox is a prescription-only medicine in Australia, and counterfeit products have not been assessed for quality, safety or efficacy.

Botox bought over the internet may be fake, contain undisclosed and harmful ingredients, and may not meet the same standard of safety.
