Prime Minister Scott Morrison announces first overseas trip in months

Prime Minister Scott Morrison will travel to Japan next week to meet the country's new leader, Yoshihide Suga.

Mr Morrison, who will also visit Port Moresby, said he will then do the mandatory 14 day isolation for coronavirus after his foreign trip at the Lodge in Canberra.

"I am honoured to be the first foreign leader to visit Japan to meet the new Prime Minister, following his appointment," he said.

"I will also be visiting Port Moresby on the return to Australia.

"Now, I'll be strictly following, as you would expect, the health advice and quarantine requirements when I return to Australia.

"I will go into isolation for 14 days as well as those who are accompanying me and what will be a first, I anticipate for the Australian Parliament, joining Question Time by video link.

"So will be a first and I can only look forward to that, as I am sure all of you will also."

Australians are currently banned from leaving the country, except for essential work or compassionate reasons.

Australians returning from overseas are sent to special hotels for 14-day quarantine, at the cost of around $3000 each.

Most Australians have been denied applications to quarantine at home, since hotel quarantine was introduced in April.

However, Mr Morrison said he'll quarantine at the Lodge.

He said the trip was "in the national interest," and he would be one of thousands of Australians who have been allowed to travel during the pandemic.

"For many months now I have engaged in telephone diplomacy on a large number of matters," Mr Morrison said.

"To be the first national leader, I think, to engage in Japan, with the new Prime Minister, and to have the opportunity to do that is significant for Australia, because Japan has a very special relationship with Australia.

"It's not just an economic one. It's not just a trade one. It's not just a cultural and social one, importantly, it a strategic one that we form together with the United States and India, a very important quad relationship.

"So the opportunity to go there and include some very important arrangements in this space is in Australia's national interest."

Mr Morrison added he will be talking to Japan's Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga about trade, security and defence, before visiting PNG's Prime Minister, James Marap, to discuss how Australia can help with coronavirus vaccines in the country.
