Confident student guesses his way to $100,000 on Hot Seat

Dumb luck or pure genius?

Khaled El-Katateny may have answered correctly on Hot Seat last night, but the reasoning behind his guess turned out to be remarkably bold.

The Melbourne law student candidly admitted he had no clue who was the artist who painted 1908's 'The Red Room', but took a punt regardless.

After getting by with lucky guesses on five questions on the way to the final question, Mr El-Katateny initially locked in answer B, Frederic Bazille.

"You knew that I didn't know this answer," he told Eddie McGuire as mulled the options.

But with just a second to spare, Mr El-Katateny switched to answer D, Henri Matisse.

"Well, I had no idea," he said after his selection.

"If you wanted to know my thought process, it was like I haven't done D in a while so I'll choose it."

The audience laughed as McGuire showed restrained consternation at Mr El-Katateny's selection process.

"I'm going great with my law degree," he said as McGuire quizzed him on his studies.

"It's just a matter of time before I become the best lawyer in the world."

Given his confidence before being told the answer, you should see how he reacts after he has won $100,000.

Mr El-Katateny said he would invest the winnings in some stocks.

Knowing his knack for picking winners, he'll probably become the next Warren Buffett.
