Student approached by stranger outside Melbourne school

Police are investigating after a student at a prestigious high school in Melbourne was approached by a stranger while waiting for a bus yesterday.

Police believe the Caulfield Grammar student was standing near a bus stop on Albion Road, near the intersection with High Street in Glen Iris about 7.30am when a dark coloured car pulled up alongside her.

A man inside the car approached the 12-year-old girl and asked her if she wanted a lift.

Police said the girl walked away and got onto the bus.

She was not physically injured.

Deputy principal Meg Adem confirmed the incident in a statement to the school community.

"The incident involved a student who was approached by a driver in a black vehicle as they were travelling to school," Adem said in the statement obtained by The Age.

"The student refused. We have met with and supported the student involved and their family, and the matter has been referred to police. It is a timely reminder to have proactive conversations with students, and our children, about how they respond to unexpected encounters."

Detectives are investigating the incident and urge anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
