Tennis Australia has issued a statement thanking the spectators who intervened to stop a pro-Palestine protester during a match involving sixth seed Alexander Zverev of Germany on Monday night.

Zverev yesterday criticised the security team's slow response to the protester after defeating Cameron Norrie to secure his spot in the quarter final.

"I understand they're all doing their job, but I think when something like this happens, it shouldn't be another fan dragging the other person out," he said.

"It should be the security guys that should be there quite quickly. It shouldn't take them three, four minutes."

The woman started throwing leaflets bearing the words 'Free Palestine' onto the Margaret Court Arena midway through the match, as Zverev's opponent Norrie struggled to hold his serve in the third set.

Footage of the incident appears to show a woman speaking angrily and holding a cup of coffee over the protester's head before another woman grabs her hands and pulls her away. A man is then seen pulling the woman up a staircase away from the court.

The statement from Tennis Australia said: "Two patrons were active in notifying security and stopping the protester, and we appreciate their actions."

Ballkids had to clear away the leaflets from the court before play could resume.
