Australians are being warned to prepare for a hot and humid summer, with above-average temperatures expected for large parts of the country in coming weeks.

The Bureau of Meteorology's forecast for December to February says most states and territories are heading for warmer than average days and nights.

There is also an increased chance of unusually high rainfall for parts of eastern and north-western Australia, including the Cape York Peninsula, southern New South Wales, eastern parts of Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and northern Western Australia.

December is likely to be the month of summer when umbrellas need to be pulled out.

The chances of above average rainfall for this month have increased in recent weeks, the bureau says.

January rainfall is likely to be within the typical range for the month.

The bureau says the likelihood of unusually high minimum summer temperatures is more than four times the normal chance.

Parts of south-eastern South Australia, western Victoria, Tasmania and western Western Australia can expect unusually hot conditions.

While heat records are safe for now, temperatures are likely to approach them by late December.

Eastern states are forecast to receive a blast of the hot conditions in coming days.

The mercury is forecast to climb to 33 degrees in Melbourne on Friday, while Sydney can expect the same temperature on Saturday.

Brisbane is headed for a wet and humid few days, with a top temperature of 30 degrees today.
