Residents of Brisbane shivered through single-digit nightly temperatures just a few weeks ago, but this week are enjoying record-warm nights.

Forecasters say the spring-like overnight temperatures are being caused by a thick layer of cloud acting as a blanket overnight, trapping the day's warmth.

It is putting Brisbane on track for four consecutive nights above 16 degrees until Friday.

The city of 2.3 million people hasn't recorded such temperatures in early August since records began in 1887.

The forecast minimum temperatures of 16 degrees to 17 degrees are about five to six degrees above the August average.

Meanwhile, the daylight temperatures in Brisbane are forecast to remain at 20 degrees today as thick cloud and rain remains over the city.

The damp conditions are being driven by an upper-level low-pressure system and associated surface coastal troughs in the region.

Looking ahead, a burst of spring-like warmth is forecast later this week ahead of a cold front.

Brisbane's temperature is likely to peak at 28 degrees on Saturday, while the mornings should drop to around 15 degrees.

The welcome warmer conditions are also being enjoyed in other parts of Australia after the bitter cold of last month.

Melbourne is forecast for a top temperature of 20 degrees today, while the mercury in Adelaide will peak at 22 degrees.
