Thousands of extra seats along with additional flights will be made available for AFL footy fans, in a bid to keep the cost down.

Qantas and Jetstar will add up to 13 additional flights and up to 6000 seats to and from Melbourne, with fares starting from $270.

It comes after flights surged ahead of the sold-out blockbuster preliminary final between the Sydney Swans and Port Adelaide.

Qantas Domestic chief executive Markus Svensson hoped the additional flights would help fans get to Melbourne ahead of the AFL Grand Final.

"Our teams are pulling out all stops to get footy fans to Melbourne next weekend," he said.

"As with all flights, the cheapest seats will sell out first so fans should get in quick."

Flight demand will be monitored over the coming days, with both airlines prepared to add additional flights if needed.
