Man accused of NT's largest mass shooting in 30 years to face trial

Accused mass murderer Benjamin Hoffmann has today been committed to stand trial in the Northern Territory Supreme Court.

The man accused of carrying out the Territory's biggest mass shooting in Darwin in 30 years has been committed to stand trial on 11 charges.

Crown prosecutor Matt Nathan read out the brief of evidence today against the 45-year-old.

It was enough to satisfy Judge Elizabeth Armitage to put him on trial.

Mr Nathan detailed each alleged murder in horrific detail from the evening of June 4, 2019 - claiming only Michael Sisois was known to the accused.

Mr Nathan told the court Mr Sisois was shot in the head and that his entire death is captured on CCTV at the Buff Club.

He added, the fourth victim, Robert Courtney was "stabbed and sliced" more than 28 times.

A pump-action shotgun, two boxes of ammunition and a hunting knife - were weapons the prosecutor alleges Mr Hoffmann used to kill.

He is also accused of threatening to "blow the head off" a Humpty Doo woman earlier that afternoon.

Mr Nathan told the court blood results confirmed methamphetamine was in Mr Hoffmann's system that evening as he drove around Darwin and its outskirts.

His defence lawyer, Peter Maley, told the court he will plead not guilty.

Speaking to journalists after court proceedings today, Mr Maley said: "He'll have his chance to tell his side of the story".

"You'll hear the balance of the evidence which the police have, and largely its medical," he said.

"You've heard the crown side today. In the Supreme Court, it will all be properly ventilated."

Mr Hoffmann is facing 13 charges in total – He will face the Supreme Court next month on 11 of those charges.

Two charges will remain in Darwin's local court, to next be heard in April.
