The safest countries in the world to travel to in 2025
Travelling to another country always comes with risk – but tourists always want to what they are.
To ease your fears about any trips planned next year, US travel insurance company Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection has surveyed travellers to find the safest countries in the world.
The company has been polling travellers since 2016 and reveals the list every year.
It looked at factors including crime rates, safety for female or LGBTIQ+ travellers, transport systems and the level of healthcare it offers tourists.
There are 15 countries spanning several continents on the list.
Read on to see them all.
15. Sweden
Scandinavian favourite Sweden rounds out the list at number 15 for safest countries in the world in 2025.
Last year, it ranked number 20 but was bumped up the list thanks to its low crime and general safety for female travellers, BHTP said.
Popular tourist spots in Sweden include the capital Stockholm, the country's scattered archipelagos and the famous ice hotel in Jukkasjärv.
14. Netherlands
The Netherlands, located in north-western Europe, was ranked the 14th safest country by travellers.
According to the travel insurance company, The Netherlands is a top 20 finisher in the Global Peace Index, has an almost non-existent homicide rate and it is easy to converse with locals as an English traveller.
Highlights in the Netherlands as the country's tulips and windmills, plus the vibrant city of Amsterdam.
13. United Kingdom
The United Kingdom, comprising England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, made it onto the list at number 13.
According to the World Population Review, the UK's criminality score rivals Australia and is also ranked among the lowest in the world.
12. Spain
Spain is a popular choice for tourists around the world and is famed for its laidback, cosmpolitan culture.
You'll feel safe in the major spots like Barcelona and Madrid.
11. Portugal
Spain's neighbour Portgual made it onto the list because of its smaller population and less tourist-heavy areas, meaning less crimes.
10. Denmark
Another Scandinavian gem, Denmark, is regarded as extremely safe for tourists.
It's described as a "warm, welcoming" place with minimal crime.
You'll find attractions like the Christiansborg Palace and historic capital Copenhagen.
9. Japan
Japan has become a haven for world travellers over the past decade and is ranked highly for safety thanks to its low homicide rate.
Though it is densely populated, tourists in Japan generally feel safe and welcome.
Visit Tokyo, Kyoto or Osaka to see the best parts of Japan.
8. Norway
Norway is regarded as Europe's safest country, according to Berkshire Hathaway.
It's largely rural and sparsely populated with minimal crime.
The Scandinavian country has plenty of gems for tourists, including the city of Oslo, the Northern Lights and famous fjords.
7. Germany
Germany is high on the list because the western European country is so well run and can properly police and handle high tourist traffic.
Rich in history, Germany comprises vibrant cities for tourists like Berlin, Munich and Frankfurt.
