Woman risks life to help injured dog on highway

An animal lover in Mexico has risked her life to cross four lanes of a busy highway to rescue an injured dog.

Vero Salgado, 35, saw the German shepherd get hit by a car as it tried to reach the shoulder of the road.

A friend of Ms Salgado who was sitting in the car filmed the rescue, which was posted online overnight.

It shows the brave animal rights activist delicately navigating her way across the highway as cars speed past.

But even after Ms Salgado reached the injured dog, the animal was in so much distress it stood up and slowly limped away as Ms Salgado tried to approach it.

"I needed to be patient, I tried slowly to coax him and eventually I managed to get up to him and put my belt around his neck as a lead," Ms Salagado said.

"The next thing I was worried about was in case he tried to run forward into the traffic as I knew I wouldn't be able to hold him but it all went well and I was able to seize the moment and cross back over to safety."

Ms Salagado eventually took the dog into her car and drove it to a nearby vet for treatment.
