Pilot pulled from water after military jet crashes into San Diego Bay

A US Navy trainer aircraft has plunged into San Diego Bay in California after coming off the end of a runway.

The pilot was able to make a safe ejection from the T-45C aircraft shortly before the trainer crashed into water.

San Diego television station 10 News have reported the pilot has been taken to hospital for treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.

The commander of the naval base has released a short statement, confirming the pilot had been safely pulled from the water.

“The aircraft was conducting routine training in advance of aircraft carrier landing qualifications prior to the mishap,” the statement read.

“A safety investigation will be carried out to determine the cause.”

The Boeing T-45C was first introduced in 1991 as a jet training aircraft, and it is expected to remain in service until at least 2035.
