Donald Trump investigating 2028 presidential frontrunner, he claims
California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced the Trump administration is investigating him.
In a podium address, the prominent Democrat excoriated the Department of Justice investigation.

“In recent days, federal agents have knocked on the doors of family and friends and former employees,” Newsom said.
“Not because they’ve found a crime, simply because they are trying to find one.”
Newsom said there was a simple motive for the investigation.
“Donald Trump isn’t coming after me because of mean tweets, but because I am considering running for President,” he said.
“Because he hates that I’ve consistently called him out over and over for his lies and his deceit.

Newsom cited investigations against Jerome Powell, Adam Schiff, Tish James, James Comey and E Jean Carroll as evidence of the president’s partisan use of the Justice Department.
“Today I proudly join that list,” Newsom said.
“To get me, he’s coming after my wife Jen.”
Newsom said his wife had done nothing wrong.

“If they can’t intimidate me, they’ll go after the mother of our children.
“Donald Trump picked the wrong target. We have nothing to hide.”
Newsom then directly criticised the president.
“If they really want to find corruption, look no further than 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue (the address of the White House),” he said.
“Donald Trump is selling the presidency. He’s running the largest cash heist in American history.
“His personal fortune has skyrocketed by four billion dollars since returning to office.”
Trump’s acting attorney general Todd Blanche ignored reporter questions about the purported investigation.

As governor of the largest state in America, Newsom is the most powerful Democratic politician in the country.
And while he has not declared a bid for the presidency in 2028, the governor’s ambitions have been far from a secret.
He has been prolific on X with memes mocking Trump.
But Newsom has an awkward family connection to the Trumps. Newsom was married to Kimberly Guilfoyle for five years.
Guilfoyle would later become Donald Trump Jr’s fiancee until they split in 2024.
Newsom’s current wife Jennifer previously dated George Clooney.
Another potential presidential candidate, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker decried the purported investigation.
“The President frequently calls for the jailing of his perceived enemies, but his playbook of weaponising the Department of Justice as a personal attack dog is another level of corruption,” Pritzker, also a Democrat, said.
“This must stop.”
The White House has not commented on Newsom’s claims.
