A US man caught spraying rat poison on fresh produce in grocery stores has been arrested by the FBI.

CCTV footage from three stores captured the Michigan man contaminating stock over a two-week period.

No charges have been imposed on the man whose identity is yet to be released, FBI spokeswoman Jill Washburn told Michigan Live.

Authorities are currently in the process of investigating more stores for contamination.

It is alleged the man used a liquid combination of mouse poison, water and hand sanitiser to create the dangerous compound.

The FBI have yet to determine the suspect's motives.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has warned local residents that contaminated produce may "still be in refrigerators or freezers," said MDARD director Jamie Clover Adams.

One of the affected grocery stores Whole Foods said in a statement that all salads and hot foods were immediately removed from shelves and destroyed.
