Donald Trump unveils new Air Force One that he'll keep after leaving office

Donald Trump has unveiled a $570 million jet that he received as a gift from the Qatari royal family as the new Air Force One.

In unveiling the Boeing 747, the US president bragged of how luxurious it was.

“This plane was transformed into a flying White House at a level of luxury that nobody has ever seen before,” he said.

Under the agreement Trump made with the Qataris, he will keep the plane once he leaves office.

But he said he will donate it to his presidential library. 

Under US law, presidents cannot accept gifts worth more than a few hundred dollars.

This modified plane will only be Air Force One until 2028, when a new fleet of Boeing jets will be delivered.

The 747 still needs to undergo commissioning flights to determine whether the many modifications it needed are in working order.

“Any aircraft bestowed the call sign ‘Air Force One’ must meet rigorous security requirements to ensure the president remains safe, protected, and fully connected,” a statement from the Air Force read.

“The VC-25B Bridge aircraft was modified under a disciplined engineering approach that prioritised these exact core capabilities above all else.”

The new Air Force One will change the paint job from its iconic white and light blue to red, white, gold and navy.

The previous Air Force One has been in use since 1990.

It comes as new polling shows Trump’s approval on his handling of the economy has hit a new low.

Just 33 per cent of Americans think he is doing a good job on the economy, the PBS News/NPR/Marist poll found.

It is now lower than Joe Biden’s approval rating at any point during his presidency.

Trump has long touted himself as being a successful businessman, and his approval on the economy was seen as being a major strength in his first term.
