Damond case: US law regarding murder

UNITED STATES CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM MURDER DEFINITIONS

Minneapolis police officer Mohamed Noor was found:

* Guilty of murder in the third degree.

In Minnesota, this is defined as causing the death of another by "perpetrating an act eminently dangerous to others and evincing a depraved mind, without regard for human life", but without intent to cause death.

The maxiumum jail sentence is 25 years.

* Guilty of manslaughter in the second degree.

In Noor's case, this is defined as causing the death of another by shooting "as a result of negligently believing the other to be a deer or other animal".

The maximum jail sentence is 10 years.

* Not guilty of murder in the second degree, which is classed as an intentional killing.

Noor, 33, had been charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter.
