Just days after losing their mother in a freak ice cave collapse in Washington state, four children have been left orphaned when their father was shot dead.

Annalisa Santana, 34, died on July 6 when an ice cave she was exploring in collapsed over her during a holiday with her family.

"This is just a complete tragedy and we’re focusing on the children," Mr Cardona's brother-in-law Brian Keith told the San Bernardino Sun.

"He was just a fun-loving guy who had a great sense of humour and just loved his kids to death."

While Ms Santana and Mr Cardona were not together at the time of her death, he was reportedly hit hard by the shock death.

His shooting came after he was asked to leave bar LuLu's Hideout after an argument with a woman, who also left at the same time.

CCTV footage recorded later on that night showed Mr Cardona returning to meet with three men before the fatal shooting.

Mr Cardona had only been out of jail for a few days after spending a few weeks behind bars for a parole violation.

He had previous convictions for domestic violence, possession of firearms and driving under the influence.

In addition to the four children he had with Ms Santana, Mr Cardona had another child from a different relationship.

The children, including a 14-year-old who suffered a leg injury in the cave collapse, are now in the care of family.
