US toddler rescued in delicate operation after getting stuck inside PVC pipe

Police in the US have been praised for their creativity after they rescued a toddler from a narrow PVC pipe meant for groundwater.

Fourteen-month-old Bentley was found trapped upright inside the pipe, which was about 30cm in diameter, outside of his Moundridge home in the state of Kansas.

Emergency services worked for about 20 minutes to safely remove the little boy, who was found uninjured.

The Moundridge Police Department praised first responders for their "swift and effective action" in what transformed a "dangerous situation into a successful rescue".

"We are relieved to report that the child, while understandably shaken, was unharmed and is once again safe," Moundridge Police Department said in a statement.

The police department said officers used a "makeshift catchpole" from smaller PVC pipe and rope.

"This creative solution was instrumental in lifting the child safely from the pipe," the department said.

"Thank you to the Moundridge community for your continued support and to all of our dedicated first responders for their exemplary service."

After the rescue, the boy's father told CNN his son "hasn't been in this good of a mood for a long time".
