Quick thinking police officer dodges disaster on US highway

Sharp thinking by a US policeman saved him from being hit by an out of control car.

Police in Kansas released video footage on Monday taken on a dashcam beside a busy highway near the city of Merriam, Fox News reports.

Footage shows the officer stand beside the driver’s door of a parked grey car holding some papers.

He turns after hearing a screech of tyres and miraculously jumps to avoid a car that smashes into the parked vehicle he is beside.

The officer emerges unscathed and still clutching the documents. He then waves to a colleague, indicating he is uninjured.

Merriam police department said the crash happened a month ago. They released the video in a tweet that read, "Slow Down, Move Over! Please give your first responders space to work."

The department said no action was taken against the driver who crashed.
