A US mum has awoken from jaw surgery speaking with a British accent much to the surprise of her family, friends and doctors.

Lisa Alamia, who was born and bred in Texas, has been speaking with a northern English twang since undergoing a routine procedure to correct an overbite six months ago.

“People who don’t know me, they’re like, ‘Hey, where are you from?’ and I say Rosenberg,” Ms Alamia told Houston Texas news KHOU.com.

“Oh, you’re from here? How do you talk like that?’ So that’s where the whole story comes up.”

Since her surgery, doctors have diagnosed Ms Alamia with the rare neurological condition foreign accent syndrome.

“I didn’t know the reaction I was going to get from people,” the mum of three said.

“So I didn’t know if they’re going to judge me. Are they going to think I’m lying or even understand how I’m speaking?”

Ms Alamia’s eldest daughter, Kayla, thought her mum was joking around when she started speaking with the accent.

“But then she showed me that the doctor diagnosed her with foreign accent syndrome. Then I was like ‘Oh, Lord’”.

It is estimated that less than 100 people around the world in the last century suffer from the condition, KHOU reports.
