US homeless man given second chance at life by mobile soup kitchen

A homeless man in the US had his life turned around after he got more than just a hot meal from a mobile soup kitchen.

Harvor Davis was living on the streets of Dallas, Texas in 2010 when he crossed paths with The SoupMan, David Timothy, who founded the SoupMobile, a non-profit mobile soup kitchen that feeds and shelters the homeless.

Mr Timothy saw potential in Mr Davis and hired him to work in the company’s warehouse.

“(Harvor) was homeless & sleeping in the back of his truck. He had no hope, no prospects & a mouth full of decaying & broken teeth,” Mr Timothy wrote in a post on Facebook.

“We found that he was honest, hardworking & just needed a second chance.

“Long story short, we hired him as a worker in the SoupMobile Warehouse.”

Mr Davis has since been promoted to Senior Warehouse Manager and chooses to work seven days a week, just because he enjoys it so much, according to US Today.

Mr Timothy then took his generosity one step further, asking a local dentist to fix Mr Davis’ teeth, a procedure which could reportedly have cost up to $50,000.

Not only did Dr Fitzgerald agree to help, but he did it for free.

“Dr. Lee Fitzgerald of Plano, Texas is not just a talented dentist with more than 25 years of experience. He is also a ‘Dentist with a Heart,” Mr Timothy said.

Mr Davis was thrilled with the change.

“My smile used to be green and ugly, but now when I smile everyone smiles back,” he told US Today.

Working for SoupMobile also gives Mr Davis a home. He now lives in a SoupMobile village.

Mr Davis says the best part of the job isn’t the living quarters, however, but being proud of himself again.

"The best part is meeting people along the way who don't look at me like I was homeless without my front teeth, but as a normal person," he said "and that goes a long way”.
