'Make every vote count': Reactions from around the world as US Election results loom

As the final result of the United States election draws nearer, public figures have taken to social media stressing the importance of votes.

While the Republican Party continues its attacks on the Democrats, Joe Biden and running mate Kamala Harris have remained confident they will emerge victorious.

Mr Biden has urged his supporters to "keep faith" in the democratic process amid growing fear President Trump will refuse to step aside if defeated.

Leaders around the world, including Australia, have shared their two cents, with Labor leader Anthony Albanese tweeting, "the democratic process must be allowed to run its course."

Hillary Clinton echoed the calls for a fair democratic process, tweeting "We'll know the election results when every ballot is counted. That's how democracy works."

Meanwhile, Trump campaigners have posted claims of voter fraud after filing numerous lawsuits against states favouring MrBiden over Donald Trump.

Mr Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani spoke earlier today announcing the Republican campaign had launched a lawsuit over what he claims is widespread voter fraud in Pennsylvania - a key state in the race to win the election.

Mr Giuliani said the postal ballots were "highly suspicious" and Republican poll observers were being hindered by Democrat officials.

Celebrities with some of the biggest followings on Twitter have shared their thoughts, emphasising the importance of each and every vote as the election hangs on a knife's edge.

"Our democracy and freedom are worth waiting for. We must #CountEveryVote," Demi Lovato tweeted today to her more than 55 million followers.

As controversy around the electorial results intensifies, some social media users are falsely claiming that ballots are being invalidated in Arizona.

In what's come to be known as #Sharpiegate, social media posts suggest that election officials in Maricopa County provided voters with Sharpie pens, which interfered with ballots being recorded, specifically those for Mr Trump.

Arizona election officials say voting with a Sharpie would have no impact on the votes being recorded by tabulation machines, and if there was an issue, there is a process that would keep the ballots from being cancelled out.

Videos making the false claim about the pens were also widely shared on TikTok.

TikTok said the claims on invalidated ballots violated its policy against misleading information around the elections and would be removed.

Facebook said it has blocked the Sharpiegate hashtag on its platform and pointed to fact checks on the matter by its outside fact-checkers, including The Associated Press.

While election officials took to social media to debunk the Sharpie rumours, others in Arizona were not convinced.

Conservative US political activist Matt Schlapp and founder of the Women for Trump group have both shared the hashtag numerous times, spreading the unfounded claims to their combined following of more than 300,000 people.

Supporters on both sides share messages of support

Michelle Obama, wife of former US president Barack Obama, has tweeted support for Mr Biden, claiming he is the right man to lead America.

"I know Joe," she wrote.

"He has lived his life guided by values and principles that mirror ones that most Americans can recognise. He understands the struggles of everyday folks."

Mr Trump's wife, Melania, retweeted a video of herself getting ready to vote in Palm Beach, Florida.

Kim Kardashian, who has previously met with Mr Trump in the White House, wrote: "I VOTED!!!! Did u???"

Her husband, music mogul, designer and US presidential election hopeful, Kanye West posted photos showing he had voted for himself.

"The first vote of my life," Kanye wrote.

Hillary Clinton, who Mr Trump defeated in 2016, posted a four-word tweet, under a photo of herself in a face mask and thumb raised.

"Just voted. Felt good," Ms Clinton wrote.

Her husband Bill Clinton, a former US president, was more direct.

"Hillary and I just proudly cast our ballots for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris," he posted on Twitter.

Meanwhile, singers Lady Gaga and Arianna Grande both expressed their support for Mr Biden.
