Donald Trump has claimed he has won three states that have not yet been called and where hundreds of thousands of votes remain uncounted.

He also claimed to have won Michigan, a state which was called for Joe Biden earlier this morning.

The claims were made in a pair of tweets.

"We have claimed, for Electoral Vote purposes, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (which won't allow legal observers) the State of Georgia, and the State of North Carolina, each one of which has a BIG Trump lead.

"Additionally, we hereby claim the State of Michigan if, in fact there was a large number of secretly dumped ballots as has been widely reported!"

Twitter immediately placed a disclaimer on the post.

"Some or all of the content shared in this Tweet is disputed and might be misleading about an election or other civic process," Twitter wrote.

There is no evidence of ballots being dumped.

The Trump campaign's demand boils down to one argument – we're ahead now, so let's call it now.

The problem for the Trump campaign is this – there are hundreds of thousands of ballots yet to be counted, and they are by and large in very Democratic areas.

Nearly all the vote is counted in Republican-heavy central Pennsylvania.

But in Philadelphia, where Joe Biden leads by 80-20, there's still 30 percent of the vote uncounted.

In Pittsburgh, another Democratic area, 20 percent of the vote is uncounted.

There isn't any evidence of foul play as yet. Absentee ballots take a long time to process because they are designed to prevent voter fraud. It involves opening an envelope within an envelope, checking that signatures line up, and sorting through other details.

Doing that hundreds and thousands of times takes time.

In Florida, officials were allowed to open and process ballots days and weeks in advance. As a result, they were able to report the vote tally very quickly.

But in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, processing ballots early wasn't allowed. It's taking time because it's a time-consuming process.

But the disputes over Pennsylvania may be a moot point. Mr Biden is currently leading in enough states to put him over the line without the state.

Mr Biden has been called as the winner in Michigan and Wisconsin, and is leading in Arizona and Nevada. That is enough to make him president.

"After a long night of counting, it is clear that we are winning enough states to reach 270 electoral votes needed to to win the presidency," Mr Biden said this morning.

"I am not here to declare that we have won, but I am here to report that when the count is finished we believe we will be the winners."

He is also projected to retake the lead in Georgia.

Alaska and North Carolina are also too close to call.
