Zoo worker in gorilla suit shot during training exercise

An out of the loop vet at a zoo in the Canary Islands has shot a co-worker dressed as a gorilla during a training exercise.

The mishap occurred at Tenerife's Loro Parque on Monday as staff at the zoo practised what to do in case one of the giant primates escaped its enclosure.

However, the organisers of the exercise failed to inform the zoo's veterinarian who saw what he thought was a gorilla on the loose and promptly shot it in the leg with a tranquiliser.

The employee in the suit had an allergic reaction to the shot and was taken to the University Hospital of the Canary Islands, where he remains in a serious condition.
