Torrential rain turns rail tunnel into river

Torrential rains in the Spanish city of Girona have turned the parts of city's high speed train system into flowing rivers.

The north western Spanish city was hit by a storm on Sunday causing rivers to overflow and halting the high speed rail service that connects Girona with France and other parts of the Iberian peninsula, El Pais reports.

Footage shot at by Jordi Aparicio shows brown water coursing down the tunnel where trains would usually run.

There is so much water that it sits just below the platform.

The train stations pumps struggled to cope and appeared to be completely overwhelmed by the sudden influx of water.

The downpour, which was reported to be the worst seen in three decades, caused disruptions outside the rail system by flooding roads and basements.
