The two people injured in a knife attack in a hallway at Amsterdam's central railway station have been identified as US citizens.

The suspect in Friday's attack is an Afghan citizen who had a German residence permit, police said.

Police said they did not believe that the two victims were deliberately targeted, but they have not given a motive for the assault. The suspect was shot and wounded by officers.

"We are aware that both victims were US citizens visiting the Netherlands and have been in touch with them or their families," US ambassador Pete Hoekstra said in statement.

"We wish them a speedy recovery and are working closely with the City of Amsterdam to provide assistance to them and their families."
