Rwandan doctor charged over 1994 genocide

Rwandan doctor Charles Twagira has been charged in France over the 1994 genocide that claimed some 800,000 lives, a judicial source says.

Twagira was a head of the main hospital in Rwanda's western city of Kibuye at the time of the unrest.

He is accused of being behind the murder of the family of a colleague and of refusing medical aid to members of the Tutsi minority who came to the Kibuye hospital.

The 54-year-old was arrested on Tuesday in Vire, in northern France, where he worked in a hospital.

Twagira was tracked down by CPCR, a French-based group which seeks to bring the perpetrators of the Rwandan genocide to justice.

France this month in a landmark ruling sentenced a former Rwandan army captain Pascal Simbikangwa to 25 years in prison for his role in the massacres.

He was the first Rwandan to be tried in France over the genocide, unleashed mainly on the minority Tutsi community after Hutu president Juvenal Habyarimana was assassinated on April 6, 1994.
