Greek ghost town slowly toppling down mountain

An abandoned Greek town is slowly crumbling down a steep slope after a 2012 landslide undermined all the buildings' foundations.

The stunning homes in the north-central town of Ropoto are now haphazardly teetering in different directions, with some already toppled down the mountain.

The village of 300 was abandoned to nature after the April 2012 landslide started to cause the buildings to tilt and slide down the slope.

The insubstantial foundations on the sharp incline started to crumble after persistent rain.

"We had been expecting this since the sixties when the first land-cracks appeared," former council president Yorgos Roubies told GreekReporter.com.

Now even a hotel, school and church after leaning over and on the verge of collapse.

Mr Roubies slammed geologists for permitting buildings to be constructed in the centre of the village even after it was apparent the ground was unsound.
