Australian exchange student dies in Norway cliff fall while posing for photo

An Australian student has died in Norway after she fell from a rock formation called Trolltunga, a popular tourist attraction, while posing for a photo.

Kristi Kafcaloudis, 24, fell several hundred metres from Trolltunga, translated to “Troll’s Tongue”, on Sunday.

The platform juts out from a mountainside and is around 700 metres above the north side of the lake Ringedalsvatnet.

Ms Kafcaloudis was on exchange to study at the University of Bergen, and was with a tour group of around 30 people in the south-west region of Hordaland when she fell.

Norwegian media reported she was posing for a photograph at the popular attraction when she lost her balance and slipped.

A search team reportedly hiked up challenging terrain for hours to locate her body, which was then taken to Odda Hospital, according to Norwegian news broadcaster NRK.

A spokesman from the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed an Australian woman had died in Norway and said they were providing consular assistance to her family.

According to her Facebook profile, Ms Kafcaloudis was originally from Yandina, Queensland, north-west of the Sunshine Coast.

She was a student at Monash University in Melbourne where she studied arts science.

“The Monash University community is deeply saddened at this news and Monash is liaising with the family, and officials here in Australia and in Norway, to provide support,” the university said in a statement.

“Our deepest sympathies are extended to her family, her colleagues and her friends during this tragic time.”
