Typhoon Glenda kills at least 20, video captures people blown off their feet

Typhoon Glenda descended upon the Philippines Wednesday, the force of it leaving at least 20 people dead and the capital Manila shut down.

The tropical cyclone has now moved out to sea and is headed for China after lashing the Philippines with winds of up to 250 kilometres per hour.

Five people remain missing.

The typhoon cut a path through the eastern islands and Manila, toppling trees, power lines, and damaging buildings.

Footage show just how fierce the weather conditions were with people being blown right off their feet and hanging on to trees for dear life.

In the video, one person can be seen holding on to their bike as winds gusts try to blow it out of their hands.

Financial markets, government offices and schools were closed, millions were left without power and almost 150,000 people were evacuated.

Emergency officials say many of those who died were hit by falling trees or collapsing houses.

A 25-year-old woman was killed when she was hit by a falling electricity pole, while a rescue worker died when a government building collapsed on him.

Typhoon Glenda is the first to make landfall since the rainy season began in June. It is also the first major storm in the Philippines since Super Tyhpoon Haiyan in November last year, which killed at least 6,000 people.
