Tommy Hilfiger releases clothing line for children with disabilities

Tommy Hilfiger has partnered with US non-profit Runway of Dreams to develop adaptive clothing versions to the designer’s already established children’s line.

Mindy Scheier, a fashion designer, founded Runway of Dreams to work with the fashion industry to create clothing for children with disabilities.

She was inspired by her son Oliver who has a rare form of muscular dystrophy.

After Oliver was diagnosed she realised his daily struggle to dress himself would limit his choices in clothing and using her background in fashion she decided to start Runway of Dreams to create adaptive mainstream clothing.

The organisation was founded in 2013 and has since been on a mission to provide more accessibility to adaptive clothing.

The clothing line from Tommy Hilfiger offers 22 pieces, which include jeans, khakis, dresses and button-up shirts, which look exactly the same as the current children’s line.

The difference is magnetic closures and Velcro in place of button and zippers to make it easier to get in and out of the garments.

Ms Scheier told Fashionista although there have always been companies making adaptive clothing, the collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger would help children to feel less limited in their fashion choices.

"There are certainly options for adaptive clothing but it was very medicinal, very purposeful," she said.
