Today In History: October 20 | Rock star survives deadly plane crash only to be shot at
On October 20, 1977, a plane carrying the American rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, known for such hit songs as Free Bird and Sweet Home Alabama, crashed in Mississippi.
Near the end of its flight, the twin-engine Convair CV-240 ran out of fuel and the pilot attempted an emergency landing. Of the 26 people on the plane, 20 survived.
Those killed included singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, his sister and backing vocalist Cassie Gaines.
On October 20, 2022, after only 44 days in office, British Prime Minister Liz Truss announced her resignation after confusion over the government's economic policies.
Her tenure at Downing Street was the shortest in the country's history.
