Deranged Spanish Catholic priest Juan María Fernández y Krohn attempted to assassinate Pope John Paul II on May 12, 1982.
Krohn wielded a bayonet in the attack that took place at the Fatima Shrine in Portugal, and left the pontiff bleeding.
King George VI, the reluctant British monarch, was crowned at Westminster Abbey in London on May 12, 1937.
He assumed the throne after his brother, the former King Edward VIII, abdicated.
Despite his hesitancy in becoming king, George VI became respected for his role in uniting Britain and its Empire during World War II. He died from cancer in February 1952.
